Graduates Need to Have Important Characteristics that Distinguish Them from Others
SINTOK, 12 November 2024: “There will definitely be others who will compete with you in whatever you do,” said the Pro-Chancellor, Yang Mulia Tengku Tan Sri (Dr) Mahaleel Tengku Ariff, at the 37th Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) Convocation Ceremony at Mu’adzam Shah Hall on Tuesday morning.
According to him, graduates must possess essential characteristics that distinguish them from others, such as integrity, knowledge and intelligence, respect, and humility. They must also accept differences and cooperate with everyone. Additionally, they must learn to let go of things that cannot be changed, pursue knowledge continuously to become an intellectual, strive to be ahead as well as different from others, and maintain commitment.
He also shared his experience and insights with the graduands, emphasising that each year, 100, 000 graduates submit their resumes in pursuit of employment. He highlighted the importance of possessing qualities such as the ability to get around complex situations, analyze them, and offer innovative solutions.
Secondly, he reminded graduands of the importance of the future and the capacity to make decisions and achieve independence. Hence, graduates must possess two critical components namely having alternative sources of income that exceed their current earnings and possessing the ability to continuously learn from those who have already achieved success.
Yang Mulia Tengku Pro-Chancellor, said that numerous events unfold unnoticed, indicating a new world that will transform both lifestyles and the future of graduates.
According to him, it is paramount that they recognise and anticipate future developments in order to ensure that graduates acquire the necessary life skills.
“I would like to conclude by emphasizing that UUM is the alma mater for all alumni and urge all of you to make this university a great university.
“At the same time, as graduates, always be grateful of your parents, academia, and UUM staff for their contributions in imparting knowledge and fostering innovative thinking, thus equipping you with new opportunities and challenges,” he said.
The Pro-Chancellor presented the 791 graduands with their respective degrees.
Also present were the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan and Deputy Vice-Chancellors.
