Graduates Need to be Equipped with Knowledge and Soft Skills
SINTOK, 20 May 2025: Today’s graduates must be more competitive and agile in adapting to the evolving career landscape, rather than relying solely on academic achievements.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Foad Sakdan said that active participation in soft skills development programmes and the cultivation of professional networks are crucial to enhancing graduate marketability.
According to him, the organization of the UUM Career Carnival 2025 is a strategic initiative to strengthen the University’s comprehensive career ecosystem. This effort aligns with Thrust 6 of the UUM Strategic Plan and supports the aspirations of the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) through the implementation of iCGPA, which emphasizes a balanced integration of knowledge, skills and values.
This speech was delivered by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Dr Ahmad Martadha Mohamed, during the official opening ceremony of the carnival yesterday.
UUM recorded a graduate employability rate of 96.6 percent in 2024, an increase from 95 percent the previous year.
Dr. Mohd Foad also highlighted the importance of mastering four key skills identified in the Oxford Economics report, namely digital skills, agile thinking skills, interpersonal and communication skills, and global operations skills.
He further expressed appreciation for the strong collaboration between industry players and government agencies in driving the success of various student career development initiatives.
A total of 50 booths from various agencies participated in the Career Carnival exhibition which lasted for two days starting yesterday at the Mu’adzam Shah Hall, UUM.
Among those present at the event were the Chief Executive Officer of Talent Bank Sdn. Bhd., Mr. Ben Ho; UUM Registrar, Mr. Ahmad Rasidi Abdullah; Director of the Graduate Career Development and Employability Centre, Dr Fikriyah Abdullah; and the President of the UUM Student Representative Council (MPP), Mr. Mohamad Amar Aidid Mohd Zain.
