SLCP hosts successful Postgraduate Colloquium 2025 showcasing multidisciplinary research excellence

SINTOK, 3 June 2025: The School of Languages, Civilisation and Philosophy (SLCP), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), successfully hosted its 2025 Postgraduate Colloquium on Tuesday, 27 May 2025, at the Bimasakti Room, SLCP. Held in a hybrid format – both online and face-to-face) – the event served as a dynamic platform for Master’s and PhD students to present their research proposals, engage in enriching academic discourse, and receive constructive feedback from seasoned scholars.
The colloquium was officiated by Dr Maizatul Azura Yahya, Deputy Dean (Academic) of SLCP, who highlighted the importance of such academic initiatives in fostering a culture of critical inquiry and research excellence. Spearheaded by Dr Nur Rasyidah Mohd Nordin, Chair of the SLCP Postgraduate Programme, the colloquium reflected meticulous planning and a deep commitment to academic advancement.
A total of 24 postgraduate students took to the stage to present their research across three key programmes under SLCP: Applied Linguistics, Contemporary Malay Language Studies, and Islamic Studies. The rich diversity of topics not only underscored the interdisciplinary nature of postgraduate research at UUM but also demonstrated the university’s steadfast dedication to advancing knowledge in the field of language, culture, and religion. Thought-provoking discussions and insightful critiques from experts created an ideal platform for intellectual growth, empowering students to refine and elevate their scholarly pursuits.
A notable highlight of the programme was the keynote session delivered by Dr Sahbi Hidri, Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences of Tunis, Tunisia. His thought-provoking presentation explored the application of Bloom’s Taxonomy in academic research and assessment design, offering postgraduate students a fresh and practical perspective on structuring research objectives, formulating critical thinking tasks, and aligning assessment methods with higher-order cognitive skills— critical components in developing rigorous research proposals and academic writing.
Through its continued focus on quality research and academic excellence, the SLCP Postgraduate Colloquium 2025 exemplified UUM’s vision of nurturing scholars equipped to address contemporary issues through impactful and methodologically sound research.
