SINTOK, 12 June 2025: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), through the Centre for International Affairs and Cooperation (CIAC), recently hosted an insightful and engaging virtual Study Abroad Sharing Session featuring the University of Tsukuba, Japan. The session attracted an enthusiastic audience comprising 19 UUM lecturers and staff members, along with 39 students – all eager to explore academic opportunities in Japan.
The highlight of the session was a compelling presentation by Dr Nomura Nakao, a prominent figure in international education at the University of Tsukuba. Dr Nomura currently serves as the Director of the Division of International Exchange Support and Regional Director for Southeast Asia at the university’s Bureau of Global Initiatives.
In addition to his leadership roles, he represents Japan on the AIMS (Asian International Mobility for Students) Steering Committee under SEAMEO RIHED. He also holds an academic appointment as an Associate Professor in Bioprocess Engineering at the Institute of Life and Environmental Sciences, where his research focuses on biotechnology innovations in environmental and food-related fields.
Dr Nomura’s presentation offered rich insights into the University of Tsukuba’s legacy, global partnerships, student support services, and the diverse accommodation options available to international students. He emphasized the university’s innovative buddy system, which plays a vital role in easing the transition and supporting incoming exchange students.
A particularly striking point was that Malaysia currently ranks highest in the number of inbound students under the AIMS programme – a testament to the strong academic bond between the two nations.
The session sparked active participation from attendees, many of whom expressed keen interest in future mobility programmes. The interactive Q&A segment provided students with a valuable platform to explore various aspects of studying in Japan, including academic life, cultural adaptation, and application procedures.
CIAC extends its heartfelt appreciation to Dr Nomura for his generous and inspiring presentation. The centre looks forward to further strengthening its collaboration with the University of Tsukuba in future academic and internationalisation initiatives.
