UUM extends aid to disaster victims

SIK – The recent storm and subsequent flooding have caused widespread devastation, leaving many in distress after losing their belongings. As the saying goes, “what appears difficult to witness is even more challenging to endure”.

Concerned with the tragedy, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) extended its support to disaster victims in several affected areas, such as Kampung Padang Kabu, Pendang and Kampung Sena, Sik, Kedah.

UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan stated that they visited the homes of students whose houses were severely damaged, including roofs that were blown off during the storm.

“We sympathise with the students and their families affected by this unfortunate event. Fortunately, the incident did not cause any fatalities.

“Upon receiving this distressing news, we stepped forward to offer our support and provide some relief to help alleviate the burden.

“As part UUM’s disaster relief efforts, we distributed basic supplies such as rice, soy sauce and other daily essentials,” he added.

He expressed hope that this effort would alleviate some of the victims’ hardships and strengthen relations between UUM and the community.

Meanwhile, Mr. Muhammad Haikal Che Johari, a Bachelor of Linguistics and Information Technology student, recounted the tense moment that took place at 3.00 p.m. when the sky darkened, and a storm accompanied by strong winds struck.

“The storm was sudden, accompanied by a loud noise that tore off the roof of our house.

“My house was badly damaged after the storm and we had to put up canvas, tied across the trees.

“Our house has been without a roof for three days, and it is quite terrifying as the rain and strong winds persist. We were worried the canvas would be blown away well,” he said.

Additionally, Bachelor of Operation Management student, Mr. Muhammad Alif Aiman Azizan expressed his excitement for the unexpected visit from UUM, especially the Vice-Chancellor.

Mr. Muhammad Alif who lives in Kampung Padang Kabu, Pendang expressed his gratitude for the attention and assistance from UUM.

“Praise be to Allah, I was surprised by the unexpected visit from UUM Vice-Chancellor and happy to receive the aid. Thank you UUM,” he said.

He further explained that the heavy rains caused the river behind his house to overflow, with water slowly rising and entering their home.

“There’s a river behind our house, and the water started rising from that area. Rubber tappers were unable to work because the plantation is flooded,” he said.
