UUM Climbers to Raise Flag at Everest Base Camp in Celebration of UUM’s 40th Anniversary

KUALA LUMPUR, 2 December 2024: To mark the conclusion of Universiti Utara Malaysia’s (UUM) 40th anniversary celebrations, a group of staff and students will raise the UUM flag at Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, in Kathmandu, Nepal, from 14 to 28 December 2024.

The activity represents UUM’s outstanding achievements as a leading management university, both nationally and internationally.

His Royal Highness (HRH) Tunku Shazuddin Ariff Ibni Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin, the Tunku Mahkota of Kedah, officiated the launching ceremony of the UUM 4 Decade Expedition at Eager Tropical Adventure, Ampang.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan, said that the expedition to Everest will serve as an intense test of the participants’ endurance in the face of the frigid temperatures while also meticulously documenting the successful ascent to Everest Base Camp.

According to him, the climbing expedition will cultivate leadership in social engagement and strengthen ethical standards, fostering a culture of excellence. Additionally, it involves documenting the entire climbing journey through mobile journalism (MOJO) and footage recordings.

He expressed confidence that the efforts and results of the rigorous training will enable them to bring back the climbing content essential for their studies and the upcoming mission, following the conclusion of the expedition.

“We are confident that UUM students who participate in this initiative will enhance their soft skills and basic skills, thereby elevating UUM’s brand on the world map.

“This team is set to generate innovative works and content, including the production of ‘virtual reality’ (VR) experiences, short documentaries serving as a digital guide for aspiring climbers, alongside book documentation, travel logs, and creative content related to climbing sports,” he said.

This expedition team is set to depart for Kathmandu, Nepal, on 14 December and is scheduled to return home on 28 December.

This expedition will be led by the Dean of the School of Creative Industry Management and Performing Arts (SCIMPA), Assoc. Prof. Dr Adzrool Idzwan Ismail.

Also present at the event were Her Royal Highness Che Puan Nur Julie Ariff, the Tunku Puan Mahkota of Kedah, and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Dr Ahmad Martadha Mohamed.
