DHAKA (Bangladesh): Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formally opened Dhaka’s first elevated metro rail line, inaugurating a new era for Bangladesh on December 28, 2022.

“Metro rail is another big step for Bangladesh,” said the prime minister on Wednesday as she unveiled a plaque in Diabari to start the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line-6 project from Diabari to Agargaon,” she added.

On the first metro train, about 200 people, including ministers, government officials, diplomats, and liberation fighters, came with the Prime Minister.

Around noon on Wednesday, the Prime Minister and her entourage boarded a train in Diabari.

The MRT Line-6 project was given the all-clear in 2012. It is expected to cost Tk 21,985 crore to finish, and it will open in June 2024.

The segment from Uttara to Agargaon, on the other hand, was opened early so that people could start using it as soon as possible.

This year, the plan was changed to include buying land for some stations and extending the line from Motijheel to Kamalapur.

The new date for completion is 2025, and the total cost of the project is now Tk 33,472 crore. Almost 60% of the total is paid for by soft loans from Japan.
