Indirect tax: A look into the latest developments

SINTOK: As part of the CEO in Class Series, a distinguished representative from the Royal Malaysia Customs Department (RMCD) was invited to deliver a lecture through the online platform Cisco Webex.

Organised by the Taxation Unit, Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz School of Accountancy, Universiti Utara Malaysia (TISSA-UUM), the lecture was delivered by Mohamad Faiz Baharin, the Head of Performance Management and Discipline Unit, from the RMCD Johor Branch.

The lecture titled ‘Indirect Tax: Insights into Latest Development’, which took place on 17 October, marked the inaugural session of the CEO in Class Series organised by the Taxation Unit at TISSA-UUM for the current semester – A231.

The subject matter pertains to a chapter that is taught in the BKAT3023 Advanced Taxation and BKAT3043 Revenue Law courses.

Head of Taxation Unit TISSA-UUM, Dr. Aryati Juliana Sulaiman said, the main focus of this programme is to address concerns related to indirect taxes, specifically the Sales and Services Tax 2.0 (SST2.0).

“Its objective is to provide useful knowledge to both students and lecturers. Throughout the course of the discussion, Mohamad Faiz imparted valuable advice to the students, emphasising the importance of recognising the significant role that indirect taxes play in our nation.

“The speaker further elaborated on his personal encounters with the challenges he faced when interacting with SST 2.0 payers,” she said.

The event attracted over 280 participants, comprising both students and academic staff members. The participants were privileged to have the opportunity to listen to the most brilliant minds in the field, resulting in a stimulating and enlightening discourse for all those who were involved.

The sharing session is anticipated to enhance participants’ understanding of indirect taxes as well as the latest advancements pertaining to the recent budget. In addition to his presentation, the speaker also delved into the field of tax calculation simulations and explored the real-world applications related to SST 2.0.

The Taxation Unit at TISSA-UUM is pleased to announce that three additional CEOs in Class instalments will be held during the A231 semester.
