Flag Handover Ceremony Symbolises UUM’s Support for SAM 2026 Athletes
SINTOK, 25 January 2026: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) organised the Flag Handover Ceremony for the athletes representing the UUM Centre for Foundation Studies in Management Contingent in conjunction with Sukan Asasi 2026 (SAM 2026), symbolising the university’s strong support in fostering patriotism, motivation and competitive spirit among the athletes who will represent the institution at the national level.
The ceremony, held at the Sultan Sallehuddin Chancellery Foyer, UUM, was officiated by UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr Ahmad Martadha Mohamed, through the symbolic handover of the UUM flag to the Director of the UUM Centre for Foundation Studies in Management, Prof. Dr Muhammad Fuad Othman, who received it as the official representative of the contingent.
In his speech, the Vice-Chancellor emphasised that the ceremony was not just symbolic, but also served as a meaningful platform to instil discipline, competitive spirit, and a strong sense responsibility among the athletes.
“The handover of this flag symbolises the university’s trust and confidence. I hope that the athletes will not only strive for victory, but also demonstrate exemplary character, uphold high standards of sportsmanship and project the positive image of UUM throughout the competition,” he said.
The SAM is a national-level annual programme introduced in 2018 and organised by the Council of Deans and Directors of the Public University Foundation Centre.
The championship is hosted on a rotational basis, involving participation from public universities and Matriculation Colleges nationwide.
For the 2026 edition, the National Defence University of Malaysia (UPNM) has been appointed as the official host of the 9th SAM 2026, which will take place from 30 January to 1 February 2026.
The championship will feature participation from 13 Public University Foundation Centres, Selangor Matriculation College, and Polytechnics from across the country.
The UUM Centre for Foundation Studies in Management contingent will compete in nine sporting events, including football, netball, volleyball, badminton, chess, tenpin bowling, athletics and e-sports.
For this edition, the contingent has set a target of five gold medals as its performance benchmark for the tournament.
Overall, the ceremony serves as an important platform to strengthen confidence, unity, and motivation among the athletes, while reinforcing the spirit of patriotism, institutional pride, and responsibility as they carry UUM’s brand, values, and aspirations onto the national stage.
