SINTOK – The Universiti Utara Malaysia Institute of Risk Management (UUM-IRM) recently hosted a session under its ResilienceTalk Series, titled “How Geopolitical Instability Is Reshaping Risk, Insurance, and Societal Resilience.”

The session brought together industry leaders, academics, students and risk management practitioners to discuss the growing impact of geopolitical instability. Moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arpah Abu Bakar, the discussion featured two prominent industry figures, Mr. Abdul Halim Jantan, Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Insurance Brokers Sdn. Bhd. and member of CEO@Faculty, and Mr. Mohamad Mohamad Zain, Chief Executive Officer of Willis Malaysia and Industry Fellow at UUM-IRM.

The discussion focused on major global developments, including the strategic rivalry between the United States and China, the Russia-Ukraine conflict and rising tensions in the Middle East. The panellists highlighted that geopolitical risk is no longer a distant or highly specialised concern, but has become a pressing business and societal issue with direct implications for supply chains, fuel prices, food security and organisational resilience.

In addressing the impact of global uncertainty on businesses, Mr. Abdul Halim emphasised the importance of organisational preparedness and adaptability. He noted that businesses should move away from attempting to predict future events perfectly and instead focus on strengthening their ability to respond effectively when disruptions occur.

“Risk management therefore becomes less about prediction and more about preparedness,” he said, adding that organisations must be able to adapt quickly, absorb shocks and continue operating despite uncertainty.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mohamad encouraged participants to view geopolitical instability not only as a source of threats, but also as a source of potential opportunities. He explained that shifting global dynamics could open new possibilities for local logistics development, supplier diversification and stronger regional business networks.

“As a risk practitioner, I always treat risk as two sides of the same coin. Risk may present something negative, but we must not forget that risk also creates opportunities,” he remarked.

The session also highlighted the important role of future professionals in navigating an increasingly uncertain global environment. Both panellists urged students to develop a resilient mindset built on adaptability, courage, ethical judgment and integrity.

Through the ResilienceTalk Series, UUM-IRM aims to continue promoting meaningful conversations on contemporary risk issues while bridging the gap between academic knowledge and industry practice. The institute also plans to organise future sessions involving experts from various sectors to further strengthen awareness, preparedness and resilience among students, academics, industry professionals and the wider community.
