PKKPK Shares Case-Based Approach to Advance Nigerian Higher Education
SINTOK, 18 May 2025: The Management and Leadership Case Study Centre (PKKPK) of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) was honoured to participate as a distinguished contributor at the international seminar titled “Re-thinking Higher Education Teaching and Learning in Nigeria from the Lens of Innovation and AI Technology.”
Held virtually on 15 May 2025, the seminar was organised by Azman University Kano in collaboration with INTI International University & Colleges. It brought together educational leaders and institutions from Malaysia, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria to explore transformative strategies for addressing critical challenges in Nigerian higher education.
Key topics included outdated pedagogical approaches, limited digital infrastructure, and the growing need to enhance graduate employability and skills development.
Representing PKKPK, its Director, Assoc. Prof. Dr Narentheren Kaliappen delivered an engaging presentation on the impact of case-based learning (CBL) as an innovative pedagogical approach.
He emphasised CBL’s effectiveness in nurturing essential 21st-century competencies such as critical thinking, decision-making, and communication- skills increasingly demanded in a dynamic global workforce. Drawing on PKKPK’s success in Malaysia, Dr Narentheren highlighted CBL’s adaptability and scalability, particularly when integrated with digital tools, making it a compelling alternative to conventional lecture-based instruction.
“To rethink higher education in Nigeria, we must reimagine the learning experience,” he noted. “Case-based learning brings engagement, relevance, and empowerment. With the right technological support, it can be tailored to diverse educational contexts.”
He also extended PKKPK’s willingness to collaborate with Nigerian institutions in co-developing localized case materials and strengthening academic capacity. He reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to advancing student-centred learning, innovation-driven teaching practices.
Moderated by Professor Abdullahi Hassan Gorondutse, the seminar featured distinguished speakers including keynote presenter Dr Salimon Maruf Gbadebo from the University of Greenwich, UK, and fellow discussant Dr Khan Sarfaraz Ali from INTI International University, Malaysia.
The seminar underscores Azman University’s strong commitment to educational reform through international dialogue and collaborations.
