CHANGLUN, 22 May 2025: Nine Bachelor of Finance students from the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), School of Economics, Finance and Banking (SEFB), successfully organized a Service-Learning Malaysia – University for Society (SULAM) program titled “Detektif Kewangan: Bijak Menguruskan Wang” on 13 May 2025 at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Dato’ Wan Kemara, Changlun.

This initiative aligns with the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia’s vision to strengthen university-community engagement by applying academic knowledge and skills for the benefit of society. As part of their coursework, the UUM students developed and facilitated an engaging educational program aimed at enhancing financial literacy among Year 5 students.

A total of 38 students participated in a series of interactive station games focused on essential money management skills. These activities were designed to be both fun and educational, helping students retain important financial concepts in a memorable way.

Each station addressed a specific financial topic—such as distinguishing between needs and wants, cultivating saving habits, and practicing budgeting. Through hands-on activities and teamwork, participants were encouraged to explore these concepts actively. The playful yet purposeful approach effectively captured the students’ attention and sparked genuine enthusiasm throughout the session.

The full support from SK Dato’ Wan Kemara’s leadership, including the headmaster, teachers, and staff, was instrumental in ensuring the program’s success. Teachers noted that students were highly engaged and demonstrated a clearer understanding of basic financial principles by the end of the session.

According to Program Director Mr. Johanthan Fabian, the initiative not only met its educational objectives but also provided UUM students with invaluable experience in community engagement and event management.

Meanwhile, Seminar in Finance lecturer, Assoc. Prof. Dr Rasidah binti Mohd Rashid, expressed heartfelt appreciation to all parties involved. She also emphasized the critical role of early financial education in shaping responsible and financially literate future citizens.

Encouraged by the success of this event, the team is now inspired to continue developing similar outreach initiatives, aiming to spread financial awareness to more young minds across diverse communities.
