Penang Governor Launches the “1 Million Trees, 1 Day, 1 Community” Book
SINTOK, 16 April 2025: The success of the 1 Million Trees in One Day planting programme has now been immortalised in a book titled “1 Million Trees, 1 Day, 1 Community”, published by UUM Press.
The book documents the achievements of the Penang State Government in implementing the initiative in conjunction with Earth Day, which is celebrated on 24 April 2024.
The book was officially launched by Tuan Yang Terutama (TYT) Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, the Governor of Penang, at the Convention Complex.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Yayasan Amal TYT Yang di-Pertua of Penang, Dato’ Seri Sr. Rozali Mohamud stated that the launch of the book marks a significant milestone, as the publication documents the programme through clear visuals and narrative, while also serving as a meaningful source of reference.
According to him, this unique programme demonstrates the manner in which theory can be translated into practical action. Inspired by the Governor of Penang, the goal to plant one million trees in a single day was successfully realised, making it the first of its kind in Malaysia.
“This programme holds significant academic merit, integrating theory with practice through 5W1H approach, along with clear and effective strategy for achieving its objectives.
“Under the guidance and conceptualization of the TYT, the programme received overwhelming support from various segments of society, spanning districts, positions and age groups,” he said.
He also emphasised that on 22 April 2024, the one-millionth tree was planted, making this programme a game changer in efforts to preserve the environment and enhance community well-being.
In terms of participation, a total of 388 schools took part in this programme with more than 121,000 students involved. A total of 154,673 gelam paya saplings were planted in schools without the need for capital allocation, while 183,941 kasturi lime trees were planted throughout the state of Penang.
Meanwhile, UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan remarked that the launch of the book conveys an important message on environmental sustainability and community solidarity.
“UUM is proud to have collaborated on the publication of this book. It is not merely a documentation, but a symbol of collective effort in addressing climate change and preserving biodiversity.
“It reflects the synergy between academia, the community, and the government in realising sustainable development aspirations,” he said.
He also extended his congratulations to the authors and researchers from the School of Technology Management and Logistics (STML) and the School of Applied Psychology, Social Work and Policy (SAPSP) and UUM Press, for their dedicated work in producing this valuable book.
The event also included the handover of a cheque amounting to RM35,000 comprising a RM20000 Book Printing Grant for 1 Million Trees, 1 Day, 1 Community to UUM Press Director, Prof. Sr. Dr Mohd Nasrun Mohd Nawi; a donation of RM10000 to the Patriot Club Penang Chapter, received by its President, Ms. Siti Nurul Aulia Abdul Malek; and a book endowment of RM5000 presented to the Director of UUM Zakat and Waqaf Centre, Dr Zulkurnai Ghazali.
