TANJUNG MALIM, 17 June 2025: The Tahlil Perdana, organised by the Ministry of Higher Education and Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), witnessed Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) officially handing over a cheque amounting to RM290,651.51 to the Accident Relief Fund, aimed at supporting the victims of the UPSI student bus accident.
The Minister of Higher Education, Dato’ Seri Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir witnessed the presentation of a cheque by UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan, to the Vice-Chancellor of UPSI, Prof. Dato’ Dr Md Amin Md Taff, at the Tuanku Canselor Hall at UPSI, yesterday.
The presentation of the mock cheque took place in the aftermath of the tragic bus accident on 9 June 2025, which involved 42 UPSI student passengers and resulted in the loss of 15 lives.
The UUM Student Representative Council (MPP) promptly organised a flash donation drive among UUM residents, alumni and the public following the tragic incident in Gerik, Perak.
The fund, established immediately after the tragedy, successfully raised RM290,651.51, reflecting the remarkable generosity of 18,927 donors from all walks of life. This outpouring of support highlights the spirit of solidarity and compassion among the community, particularly within the university, during this time of grief and mourning.
The President of the UUM SRC, Mr. Mohamad Amar Aidid Mohd Zain, expressed his gratitude to all donors including students, alumni, UUM staff, government agencies, corporate bodies, and the general public who responded swiftly to the humanitarian appeal.
“The support we have received is profoundly moving, and we stand united in our efforts to alleviate the challenges faced by our friends at UPSI, as their tears resonate with our tears,” he said.
On 9 June, the nation was shaken by a tragic accident involving a bus carrying 42 UPSI students en route from Jertih, Terengganu to Tanjung Malim, Perak.
The tragic accident also involved a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) on the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Banding Lake in Gerik, claiming the lives of 15 university students.
