JAKARTA, 15 February 2026: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) continues to expand its international academic footprint as two of its distinguished scholars, Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Samsul Ariffin Abdul Karim and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sharmila Karim, successfully conducted an intensive hands-on workshop titled “Using LaTeX for Academic Writing” at the Graduate School of Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ).
Organised under the banner of Research Camp #3, the workshop aimed to strengthen research writing capabilities among postgraduate students and early-career researchers by equipping them with advanced technical skills in LaTeX and Overleaf, globally recognised tools for producing high-quality, publication-ready scholarly manuscripts.

The session adopted a structured, practice-oriented approach, guiding participants from foundational LaTeX architecture to the development of a complete academic article. Participants were trained to systematically construct manuscript sections, integrate complex mathematical equations, design tables and figures, and manage references efficiently using BibTeX. The workshop emphasised not only technical proficiency but also international publication standards and best practices in academic formatting.
Participants actively engaged in real-time document development, transforming theoretical understanding into practical output. The interactive approach ensured that participants left the session with tangible skills directly applicable to journal submissions and conference publications.
The Graduate School of UNJ expressed deep appreciation for the expertise and dedication demonstrated by the facilitators.
“We are sincerely grateful to Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr Samsul Ariffin Abdul Karim and Assoc. Prof. Dr Sharmila Karim for sharing their profound knowledge and international research experience. The workshop was delivered with exceptional clarity, depth, and academic rigour. This initiative will significantly enhance the long-term quality and competitiveness of our research publications,” said a representative of the organising committee.

The programme was conducted smoothly and professionally, reflecting a growing and meaningful academic partnership between Universiti Utara Malaysia and Universitas Negeri Jakarta. The speakers’ extensive international publication records and scholarly leadership further elevated the value and impact of the session.
Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr Samsul Ariffin Abdul Karim is an established authority in numerical analysis, machine learning, and applied mathematics, with more than 223 Scopus-indexed publications and several academic books published by reputable international publishers. His research contributions continue to influence interdisciplinary computational methodologies.
Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Dr Sharmila Karim is widely recognised for her expertise in applied mathematics, numerical methods, and mathematical modelling, supported by a strong portfolio of peer-reviewed international publications and sustained research engagement.

The workshop reaffirmed the critical role of mastering advanced academic writing tools in enhancing research excellence, publication readiness, and global visibility for higher education institutions.
Building on this successful engagement, a follow-up session titled “Research Design and Publication Strategies,” to be delivered by Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr Samsul Ariffin Abdul Karim, is scheduled for next month, further reinforcing the shared commitment to sustained scholarly capacity building.
The Graduate School of Universitas Negeri Jakarta expressed optimism that this impactful collaboration will serve as a catalyst for deeper institutional partnerships, joint research initiatives, and continued academic exchange between the two universities.
