ROMANIA, 27 July 2025: Studying abroad is more than just a chapter in one’s academic journey—it is a powerful catalyst for global awareness, cultural appreciation, and personal discovery. Thanks to the Erasmus+ Student Mobility Exchange Programme, UUM students are afforded the rare chance to experience this transformation firsthand. For Ms. Nur Adibah Mohd Fouzi, it became the adventure of a lifetime.

A Bachelor of Science in Economics (Hons) student from the School of Economics, Finance and Banking, Ms. Adibah spent the Spring 2025 semester (February to June) at the West University of Timișoara (UVT) in Romania, under the prestigious Erasmus+ programme. The experience left an indelible mark on her academic and personal journey.

“Alhamdulillah, I had the incredible opportunity to study in a completely new environment. The interactive learning style and small class sizes at UVT really helped me build confidence and sharpen my critical thinking skills,” she said.

At UVT, Ms. Adibah immersed herself in challenging yet rewarding courses, including Economic and Financial Analysis, Portfolio Management of Financial Assets, and Financial Control.  Each subject offered her a fresh perspective, while the dynamic classroom environment encouraged open dialogue and intellectual curiosity.  “The openness and classroom discussions reminded me of home, but what truly stood out was the close-knit relationship between professors and students. It made learning so much more personal and impactful.”

Beyond lecture halls, Ms. Adibah found herself in a vibrant international community. “I met students from all over the world. We travelled together around Romania and even ventured beyond its borders. Just by being in their company, I learned so much about the world and myself.”

She also shared her unique experience as a Muslim student abroad. “Celebrating Ramadhan and both Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha in Romania was something I never imagined. It challenged me in beautiful ways and strengthened my connection to my faith. It was a journey of both inner peace and outward strength.”

Ms. Adibah’s semester in Romania helped her develop greater independence, resilience, and intercultural awareness. “This experience taught me to step beyond my comfort zone, embrace the unfamiliar, and celebrate diversity. I came back with stronger communication skills, greater cultural sensitivity, and memories that I will carry for the rest of my life.”

To fellow UUM students contemplating and exchange programme, Ms. Adibah offers encouragement. “If you are thinking about applying—just go for it! Studying abroad is not just about books and lectures. It helps you discover who you are, forging friendships across continents, and seeing the world through new eyes.”

At UUM, student exchange programmes are facilitated by the Centre for International Affairs and Cooperation (CIAC). Through a variety of mobility opportunities, students are empowered to take their learning far beyond the classroom.
