SINTOK, 18 June 2025: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) continues to make significant strides on the international stage, having achieved a remarkable advancement in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2025. The University ascended from the 301–400 range in 2024 to the 101–200 range this year.

This impressive 200-leap not only demonstrates UUM’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but also enhances its standing as a progressive and innovative higher education institution.

In this year’s ranking, UUM recorded a commendable performance in comparison to the previous year. Under SDG 4: Quality Education, UUM climbed to the 56th position in 2025, a notable improvement from the 101–200 range in 2024. This achievement underscores UUM’s commitment to enhancing access to inclusive and quality education. Additionally, for SDG 10: Reducing Inequality, UUM achieved a remarkable increase when UUM rose significantly to 41st position, a substantial improvement from its previous placement in the 201–300 range.

Meanwhile, for SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, UUM maintained its ranking within the 101–200 range, demonstrating an increased impact score compared to 2024, indicating a qualitative improvement in the implementation of associated initiatives.

UUM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan said that this achievement is no coincidence. The outcome is attributable to various strategic initiatives undertaken by the university, which include the enhancement of inclusive education policies, the implementation of high-impact research programmes, and the establishment of close collaboration with various parties including government agencies, industry and non-governmental organisations.

He stated that UUM is also actively expanding its international network and improving the quality of academic publications that contribute to global rankings.

“I view this achievement as a manifestation of the unwavering commitment of all university staff in positioning UUM a leader in sustainable education.

“This achievement is the result of the collective efforts of all UUM staff, who consistently strive to position this university as a leader in sustainable education. It also reflects our commitment to advancing the global agenda through an inclusive, ethical and sustainable approach,” he said.

He added that this recognition will serve as a catalyst for UUM’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its position as the eminent management university, one that excels not only in academics but also in fostering community and environmental development.

With this achievement, UUM demonstrates that Malaysian public universities possess the capability to compete on a global scale and contribute significantly to the advancement of the global sustainable development agenda.
