Tunku Mahkota of Kedah Urges Development of ‘Thinking Athletes’

Sintok, 25 February – His Royal Highness Tunku Shazuddin Ariff Ibni Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin, the Tunku Mahkota of Kedah and Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), graciously visited the UUM Sports Centre to inspect the university’s sports facilities.

 

His arrival was warmly welcomed by UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan.

Also present were UUM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Dr Ahmad Martadha Mohamed; Director of the Kedah Sports Council, Mr. Zulzuraidy Othman; and Director of the UUM Sports Centre, Dr Nasiruddin Haron.

During the visit, the Crown Prince of Kedah emphasised the importance of ongoing efforts by the UUM Sports Centre in nurturing athletes who excel not only in sports but also in critical and intellectual thinking or referred to as “thinking athletes.”

He stated that excellence in sports ought to complement academic success, aligning with the university’s aspiration of producing holistic graduates who are competent in various aspects of life.

His Royal Highness also called for a strategic collaboration between UUM and the Kedah Sports Council to formulate initiatives aimed at producing outstanding athletes from the state capable of competing at both national and international levels.

 

As part of the visit, the Crown Prince of Kedah also toured several key facilities at the UUM Sports Centre, including the swimming pool, multipurpose hall, squash courts, e-sports studio, gymnasium, sports arena, and stadium track.

The visit concluded with a royal luncheon at Dusun Riffaa, Changloon.
