Today’s Graduates Reflect Alma Mater’s Education Quality

The success of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and its graduates today reflects the quality of education cultivated by UUM over the past 40 years.

The Pro-Chancellor, His Royal Highness (HRH) Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah Ibni Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin, the Raja Muda of Kedah, said in his address that in light of UUM’s latest achievements, this university is recognised as one of the best universities in Malaysia and ranks among the best universities in the world.

In his address, UUM attained the highest ranking in the QS Asian Rankings 2025, securing the 79th in Asia, compared to the 101st last year. This achievement places UUM at its highest position since 2015, when it first appeared in the ranking. Meanwhile, in the Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings 2024, UUM secured the 71st position in the world, a remarkable leap from 95th position last year, while ultimately securing the top rank among public universities in Malaysia.

HRH Tuanku Pro-Chancellor stated that today’s convocation ceremony serves not only to commemorate the graduands’ academic achievements but also to acknowledge their new lives filled with opportunities, challenges, and hopes for personal and professional development.

According to him, while university knowledge serves as a solid foundation, the skills and values one develops will ultimately define their identity as a person and as a capable member of society who can serve in an authoritative capacity.

“Upon entering the workforce or assuming new responsibilities, remember that success is not exclusively quantified by achievements but rather by the constant commitment to the principles and morals that are firmly held throughout life.

“Integrity entails the commitment of doing what is right even when in the absence of an audience, stands as one of the most revered values. In a world that often presents shortcuts and the temptation to compromise, maintaining self-integrity serves as a strong guide and foundation,” he said.

HRH Tuanku Pro-Chancellor stated that as one embarks on a new phase, keep in mind that the graduate’s attitude will significantly influence their personal experience.

He stated that in the future, there may be occasions when events do not unfold as planned or the graduates may experience feelings of stress or stagnation. Keep in mind that challenges are not obstacles but opportunities.

“Success is often the result of dedication, persistence, and perseverance. When starting a career, know that there are no shortcuts to lasting success. However, perseverance and hard work will undoubtedly yield rewards.

“Have confidence in your own talents and skills. Indeed, the readiness to embrace uncertain situations and confront obstacles bravely will distinguish you from others,” he said.

HRH Tuanku Pro-Chancellor said, in today’s rapidly changing world, no one can foresee with precision what the future holds.

HRH Tuanku Pro-Chancellor urged the graduands to persist in discovering and nurturing the treasures, values, and culture of knowledge while venturing into new knowledge. Every graduate must inculcate a culture of lifelong learning and scholarship.

During the second session, a total of 643 graduands comprising Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Doctor of Management (D.Mgmt), Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), and masters were awarded their respective degrees this morning.

Also present were the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan; members of the University Board of Directors; and Deputy Vice-Chancellors.
