PENANG, 19 January 2025: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), through its Centre for International Affairs and Cooperation (CIAC), organized a memorable educational visit to the Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Penang.
The visit aimed to introduce UUM’s international students to Malaysia’s rich marine biodiversity and the country’s efforts in coastal ecosystem conservation.
The delegation, comprising 28 international students and CIAC staff members, was warmly welcomed by the CEMACS team. The visit began with an engaging presentation by Mr. Muhammad Izzat Irfan, Science Officer at CEMACS, who provided insights into ongoing projects, including marine biodiversity studies and conservation strategies.
Following the presentation, participants toured CEMACS’s state-of-the-art facilities, including its research laboratories, Marine Reference Collection, and Museum.
Students also had the unique opportunity to observe live cultivation and conservation practices, explained by Ms. Fatin Najihah, Assistant Science Officer, and Mr. Lim Er Vin, Research Officer at CEMACS.
This visit proved highly beneficial for UUM’s international students. It offered them firsthand exposure to Malaysia’s efforts in marine and coastal conservation. It enhanced their understanding of global environmental challenges while the interactive sessions allowed students to appreciate the complexity of marine ecosystems and fostered a sense of responsibility toward environmental stewardship.
One student remarked, “This visit was an eye-opening experience. We learned so much about marine life and the challenges faced in preserving these ecosystems. It has inspired me to think about how I can contribute to sustainability efforts.”
By organizing such activities, CIAC continues to provide international students with enriching opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. The visit to CEMACS not only deepened the students’ knowledge of marine science but also strengthened cross-cultural understanding through shared experiences.
