ALOR SETAR, 17 February 2025: Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that affects brain function, influencing an individual’s ability to communicate, interact, and learn. In recognition of the importance of inclusivity and support for individuals with autism, the Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business (OYAGSB) organized a community engagement program in collaboration with the National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM). The event took place on 10 February at NASOM.

Postgraduate students and staff from OYAGSB actively participated in the program, engaging with children through various interactive and educational activities. These included hands-on gardening sessions, where the children learned to plant flowers, food preparation activities, and group games aimed at promoting teamwork and social interaction.

Speaking about the initiative, Prof. Dr. Subramaniam, Deputy Dean of OYAGSB, emphasized that the program not only raised awareness about autism but also served as a reminder for participants to appreciate their own privileges, particularly in the context of raising healthy children.

Postgraduate student dm. Siti Suriati Khairon, who conducts research on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the fields of economics, finance, and leadership, shared her experience, stating, “This is the first time I have engaged with such a large group of autistic children. This exposure allows me to observe autistic behaviors in greater detail, which is incredibly valuable and beneficial for my research.”

As part of its commitment to social responsibility, OYAGSB also contributed several sets of teaching aids to NASOM, supporting the center’s efforts in providing quality learning experiences for the children under its care.

Through initiatives like this, OYAGSB not only strengthens its commitment to community engagement but also reinforces the university’s dedication to University Social Responsibility (USR), fostering empathy, awareness, and a meaningful societal impact. – Hasniza Norsazali and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Francis Chuah
