Prepared by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azira Abdul Adzis

JITRA, 19 May 2025: Twelve Bachelor of Banking students from the School of Economics, Finance and Banking (SEFB), successfully organized a Service-Learning Malaysia – University for Society (SULAM) program on 11 May 2025 at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Seri Mahawangsa, Jitra.

This meaningful initiative echoes the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia’s call for institutions of higher learning to foster meaningful university-community engagement through the transfer of academic knowledge to society.

Organised as part of the students’ academic coursework, the program set out to raise awareness about financial scams among school educators and students. A key highlight was a compelling session by officers from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), who shared gripping real-life cases and deep insights into now financial scams are orchestrated across the country. Their eye-opening stories sparked intense interest and concern, particularly among the teachers, many of whom acknowledged the growing threat of scams targeting educators and retirees.

The program welcomed the enthusiastic participation of 10 Form 6 teachers and 27 Form 6 students, who engaged actively in discussions and interactive activities. The collaboration with PDRM elevated the program’s content and impact, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees. Full support from the school’s leadership- including the principal, teachers, and students was instrumental in the program’s success.

According to the Program Director, Ms. Daarshini Muniandy, the initiative not only achieved its goal of knowledge transfer but also provided UUM students with a valuable taste of real-world experience in planning and executing community-based educational activities.

The Seminar in Banking lecturer, Assoc. Prof. Dr Azira Abdul Adzis, expressed hearfelt thanks to all parties involved and underscored the importance of continuous community efforts in combating financial scams through education.

Motivated by this success, the team is eager to expand similar initiatives in the near future – reaching more communities and continuing their mission to empower society through knowledge.
