POKOK SENA, 26 May 2025: Women entrepreneurs in Malaysia’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector are steadily gaining ground, with increased participation marking a positive shift. However, many still face significant challenges – chief among them is the digital skills gap. This shortfall often limits their access to e-commerce and digital marketing opportunities hence impacting their competitiveness in today’s fast-evolving marketplace.

In response to these challenges, the Othman Yeop Abdullah Graduate School of Business (OYAGSB), organized a Knowledge Transfer Program on 20 May 2025 in Kampung Bukit Teriak, Pokok Sena, Kedah. The initiative was designed to empower local women, including single mothers and small-scale entrepreneurs, by equipping them with essential business knowledge and practical skills.

The program featured expert-led training sessions delivered by speakers from the School of Economics, Finance and Banking (SEFB) and the School of Business Management (SBM). Topics covered included the fundamentals of financial management fundamentals, marketing strategies tailored for SMEs, and an introductory course on hydroponic farming systems. The one-day event drew participation from 47 women across from Kampung Bukit Teriak and neighbouring communities. Postgraduate students and OYAGSB staff supported the effort as facilitators and volunteers, fostering a spirit of collaboration and community engagement.

Adding a charitable component to the initiative, ten asnaf families from the village received contributions in the form of essential grocery items. These were personally presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr Francis Chuah Chin Wei, Academic Director of OYAGSB Sintok.

Reflecting on her experience, UUM postgraduate student Mdm. Sarliza Saari, who volunteered during the event, shared, “This program not only empowers the local community but also provides students with a meaningful opportunity to engage with society. I hope to see more initiatives like this in the future,” she said.

The initiative underscores OYAGSB’s ongoing commitment to community outreach, social responsibility, and inclusive economic development – demonstrating how education can be a powerful tool for transformation. -Nor Hashima Husin
