GEORGETOWN, 22 June 2026: The Global Buddies Club (GBC), in collaboration with the Centre for International Affairs and Cooperation (CIAC) of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), successfully organised a two-day cultural and recreational excursion to Georgetown, Penang, on 5 and 6 June 2026. The programme involved international mobility students from Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand, and Uzbekistan was designed to provide participants with an immersive experience of Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage while fostering friendship, cultural exchange, and meaningful interactions among students from diverse backgrounds.

A total of 36 participants arrived in Georgetown on 5 June and spent the afternoon exploring the   vibrant UNESCO World Heritage city through self-guided activities. Students had the opportunity to savour local cuisine, visit historical landmarks, admire the city’s renowned street art, and experience the multicultural atmosphere that has made Georgetown one of Malaysia’s most distinctive destinations.

The highlight of the first day was an evening gathering at Batu Ferringhi Beach. Against the backdrop of Penang’s scenic coastline and breathtaking sunset, participants enjoyed dinner and took part in a series of interactive activities aimed at strengthening teamwork, communication, and cross-cultural friendships. The evening concluded with a captivating fire show performance, whose dazzling display of skills and artistry left a lasting impression on the participants. Combined with the cool sea breeze and lively atmosphere, the experience created cherished memories for all involved.

On the second day, the group visited Kek Lok Si Temple, one of the largest and most renowned Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia. The visit provided students with the insights into the temple’s history, architecture, and cultural significance, thereby deepening their appreciation of Malaysia’s multicultural society. It also served as a valuable opportunity to promote intercultural understanding and expose participants to another important aspect of Penang’s rich heritage.

Following the educational visit, the group proceeded to Chowrasta Market, one of Penang’s oldest traditional markets. There, they explored the bustling marketplace, interacted with local vendors, sampled local delicacies, and enjoyed lunch. The independent exploration session enabled participants to experience everyday local life firsthand while discovering unique products, traditional foods, and cultural practices that have been preserved for generations.

The programme successfully combined educational, cultural, and recreational elements, offering international mobility students a holistic experience of Penang’s heritage and contemporary lifestyle. More importantly, it provided a platform for participants to build friendships, exchange perspectives, and create memorable experiences together.

The Global Buddies Club extends its appreciation to all participants, facilitators, and organising committee members whose dedication and support contributed to the success of this programme. Through initiatives such as this, GBC remains committed to enriching the international student experience at UUM by promoting cultural understanding, global engagement, and meaningful connections among students from around the world. – Cheong Jian Le
