UUM strengthens global academic presence at Cambridge Geopolitics Forum

UNITED KINGDOM, 16 March 2025: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) continues to strengthen its global presence in academic discourse, as its Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International), Prof. Dr. Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani, was invited by the Centre for Geopolitics and Malay World Studies at the University of Cambridge to deliver a talk on ASEAN and geopolitical challenges on 11 March 2025.
The event attracted postgraduate students, academics, and researchers from the University of Cambridge, along with a visiting scholar from Oxford University.
The session began with an introduction to UUM, highlighting the university’s commitment to expanding international collaborations and fostering academic networks.
In his talk, Prof. Dr Mohd Azizuddin spoke about the current geopolitical landscape in the Asia-Pacific, addressing the impact of the Ukraine and Gaza conflicts, the potential consequences of a second Donald Trump presidency on Southeast Asia, and ASEAN’s role in the ongoing trade war between the West and East.
He also discussed Malaysia’s economic outlook under the institutional reforms of Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, as well as the opportunities and challenges arising from regional geopolitical shifts.
The session concluded with a dynamic Q&A session, where participants shared insights on ASEAN security, internal conflicts, and global uncertainties. The insightful discussion fostered a deeper understanding of ASEAN’s evolving role in international affairs while further demonstrating UUM’s commitment to engaging in critical global conversations.
