AYER HITAM, 3 March 2025: The Pesta Angin Timur Antarabangsa (International East Wind Festival) was an unforgettable experience for the Uzbekistan delegation, providing them with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Malaysian traditions, sports, and community life.
Held from 20 to 22 February 2025, the festival was co-organised by the Kubang Pasu District Office, the Matang Kenanga villagers, the UUM Alumni Centre, the Centre for International Affairs and Cooperation (CIAC), and the School of Technology Management and Logistics (STML), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM).
On the 21 February, the Uzbekistani students, along with participants from Japan, Pakistan, and ASEAN countries, contributed to the festival’s international atmosphere.
The Uzbekistan delegation actively participated in an energizing aerobic session, the grand opening ceremony, and a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, where they helped plant nearly 200 trees around the village, emphasising the festival’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
One of the most memorable experiences was the foster family programme, where the Uzbekistani students were invited into local Malaysian homes during the Friday prayer break. This initiative allowed them to experience daily village life, engage in meaningful cultural exchanges, and enjoy Malaysia’s renowned hospitality.
To further enhance their learning experience, the UUM Alumni Centre, in collaboration with UUM alumni, organised Knowledge Transfer Programmes (KTP) during the festival. The Uzbekistani students took part in specialised sessions on safety and security, agricultural entrepreneurship, and ecotourism, gaining valuable insights into Malaysia’s community-driven initiatives.
They also enjoyed friendly football and handball matches, competing with local teams, which fostered sportsmanship, teamwork, and lasting cross-cultural friendships. Additionally, the Uzbekistan delegation and other visitors explored exhibitions hosted by local government bodies, learning about regional development, traditional crafts, and community projects while sampling a variety of authentic Malaysian delicacies from the many food stalls.
The festival concluded with a hands-on batik painting workshop, where the Uzbekistani students had the opportunity to learn the intricate techniques behind Malaysia’s iconic textile art. This engaging session not only enhanced their appreciation for Malaysian craftsmanship but also provided them with a treasured keepsake of their cultural exchange experience.
The Pesta Angin Timur Antarabangsa 2025 left a lasting impression on the Uzbekistan delegation, offering them a deep and immersive experience of Malaysia’s rich heritage. Through such international collaborations, UUM continues to promote global friendships, cultural understanding, and meaningful exchanges that strengthen ties between Malaysia and Uzbekistan. – Mohd Azri Abdul Aziz
