SELANGOR, 5 Mac 2025: The Centre for International Affairs and Cooperation (CIAC), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), in collaboration with the Malaysian Research Institute on Ageing (MyAgeing), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), successfully organised a Roti Jala cooking class for the Uzbekistan delegation as part of their cultural immersion experience in Malaysia. This hands-on activity introduced the participants to one of Malaysia’s iconic traditional dishes, typically served during afternoon tea.

Before the cooking session began, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rahimah Ibrahim, Director of MyAgeing, UPM, welcomed the Uzbekistan group and provided an insightful briefing on the institute’s establishment, vision, and mission. She highlighted the MyAgeing’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of the ageing community through research and social initiatives, fostering an appreciation for Malaysia’s efforts in elderly care and community engagement.

Under the guidance of MyAgeing’s patrons, the Uzbekistan participants eagerly took part in preparing Roti Jala, a delicate net-like crepe that resembles a fishing net. They were fascinated by the intricate technique of drizzling the batter onto the hot pan and enjoyed learning how to pair the dish with flavourful curry. The hands-on experience not only deepened their understanding of Malaysia’s culinary traditions but also provided a meaningful opportunity to engage with the local community.

The Uzbekistan delegation expressed their excitement and appreciation for the opportunity to learn and taste an authentic Malaysian dish. Many participants shared that the session enriched their understanding of Malaysia’s vibrant food culture and strengthened their bond with the local hosts. The event also served as a platform for cross-cultural interaction, reinforcing the role of food in connecting people from different cultures.

Through this successful collaboration, CIAC and MyAgeing, UPM, continue to foster global engagement and cultural appreciation by introducing international participants to Malaysia’s unique traditions. This initiative not only enhanced the Uzbekistan delegation’s experience but also highlighted the role of MyAgeing in promoting lifelong learning and community involvement. – Mohd Azri Abdul Aziz
