PENANG, 16 January 2025: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), through its Centre for International Affairs and Cooperation (CIAC) has taken a significant step towards environmental conservation with its University Social Responsibility (USR) initiative, “CIAC Nature’s Call: Hike & Heal the Environment.” This meaningful program, organized by CIAC in partnership with the City Council of Penang Island (MBPP), brought participants to the scenic Youth Park for a day of hiking and plogging.

The event, spearheaded by Mr. Khairol Izwan Salamat, Senior Assistant Director of MBPP’s Corporate Management and Community Department, seamlessly combined a 1.5-kilometre hike through the park’s two picturesque checkpoints with a vital clean-up effort.

A diverse group comprising 28 international students, six CIAC staff members, and ten MBPP representatives participated in this eco-friendly adventure. Under the guidance of MBPP Ranger, Mr. Jamal Ariffin, the participants explored the park’s well-maintained network of trails, which are popular among local residents for fostering active and healthy lifestyles.

During the hike, the group collected approximately 4kg of waste, highlighting their shared commitment to environmental sustainability. The breathtaking views of the “Pearl of the Orient” from the second hike’s checkpoint served as a fitting reward for their efforts.

Before hitting the trails, participants were treated to an exhilarating aerobic exercise session led by Mr. Subramaniam Karupayah, a retired Government hospital staff member and active volunteer with the Youth Park Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). The 15-minute warm-up session, filled with energetic moves, set an enthusiastic tone for the program’s activities.

The event underscored the power of community partnerships in addressing pressing environmental issues. CIAC’s commitment to sustainability, combined with MBPP’s local expertise, demonstrated how collaborative efforts can yield meaningful outcomes. Beyond promoting environmental stewardship, the programme also strengthened ties between UUM’s international community, local stakeholders, and the vibrant population of Penang. – Mohd Azri Abdul Aziz
