PENANG, 19 January 2025: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) is committed to providing its international students with enriching cultural experiences. A recent Batik Canting workshop at Penang’s Youth Park Information Centre is a perfect example of this commitment.
Following their participation in “CIAC Nature’s Call: Hike & Heal the Environment,” event, the Centre for International Affairs and Cooperation (CIAC) gathered 28 international students for an engaging cultural activity: Batik Canting.
The event began with an insightful presentation by Mr. Mohd Azri Abdul Aziz, Assistant Director of CIAC, who provided an overview of the history and significance of Batik canting, an iconic traditional art form in Malaysia.
Participants learned about the intricate process of creating batik patterns, from the application of hot wax to fabric to the vibrant coloring techniques that bring the designs to life.
Following the presentation, the students participated in an interactive Batik canting and coloring activity. They were guided step-by-step by local Batik artist, Madam Rosnah Ishak to create their own batik masterpieces.
One participant described the experience as both enjoyable and enriching, highlighting the symbolic meanings embedded in batik patterns. Others expressed excitement about taking home their self-made batik—a tangible and meaningful reminder of their journey in Malaysia.
The session highlighted CIAC’s dedication to enhancing the international students’ experience at UUM by introducing them to Malaysia’s diverse cultural traditions. Activities like Batik canting not only enable students to engage with local culture but also foster cross-cultural connections and help them develop a sense of belonging within the community.
Through this hands-on experience, participants left with not only with artistic creations but also with newfound knowledge and cherished memories, enriching their overall educational journey at UUM. – Mohd Azri Abdul Aziz
