TAIPING, 6 May 2025: In a commendable effort to champion environmental sustainability and community engagement, the Centre for International Affairs and Cooperation (CIAC), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), in collaboration with the Taiping Municipal Council and Zoo Taiping & Night Safari (ZTNS), successfully organised a corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme at ZTNS, Taiping, Perak. The event brought together members of the UUM Global Buddies Club (GBC) and 42 international students from China, Indonesia, Pakistan, Palestine, Uzbekistan, Yemen, and Nigeria.

This meaningful initiative aimed to promote environmental awareness, encourage cross-cultural engagement, and instill a sense of social responsibility among UUM’s diverse international student community. The event began with a warm welcome, followed by an informative introduction and safety briefing delivered by Ms. Azyani Aripin, Assistant Administrative Officer of ZTNS.

“ZTNS is the only zoo located in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia. It was the first zoo established in the country in 1961 and is now home to more than 120 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish — many of which are endangered,” she explained, highlighting the zoo’s longstanding commitment to conservation.

After the briefing, participants were divided into seven groups and assigned to various zones throughout the zoo. Under the supervision of ZTNS and CIAC staff, students enthusiastically engaged in cleaning animal exhibit areas, beautifying selected zones, and repainting animal enclosures using eco-friendly materials. These hands-on activities not only supported the upkeep of one of Malaysia’s most treasured zoological parks but also offered students a unique opportunity to actively participate in environmental conservation efforts.

Upon completing their tasks, participants toured the zoo, gaining a deeper understanding of Malaysia’s biodiversity and ZTNS’s role in wildlife education and preservation.

“This is my first time visiting a zoo in Malaysia, and I am amazed by how well-maintained it is and the large number of visitors it attracts,” said Muhammad Murad, a PhD student from Pakistan.

The event concluded with the presentation of certificates of appreciation from ZTNS, recognising the students’ valuable contributions to both the community and the environment.

Ultimately, this CSR programme served as a dynamic platform for fostering environmental consciousness, promoting teamwork, strengthening friendships, and encouraging cultural exchange – core elements of CIAC’s dedication to holistic education and international student engagement. – Mohd Azri Abdul Aziz
