LANGKAWI, 27 April 2026: The tropical allure of Langkawi Island came vividly to life as 65 inbound mobility and full-time international students from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), representing countries from across the globe, embarked on an unforgettable three-day edutourism journey—marking the beginning of a meaningful cultural, educational, and intercultural experience.

Representing a diverse array of countries, including Afghanistan, Brunei, China, Finland, France, Indonesia, Pakistan, Thailand, and Uzbekistan, the students began their journey with a palpable sense of excitement and curiosity. For many, it was their first time visiting Langkawi and, notably, their first experience travelling by ferry — adding an extra layer of wonder to the adventure.

Accompanied by dedicated staff from the Centre for International Affairs and Cooperation (CIAC), together with CIAC interns and members of the Global Buddies Club (GBC) serving as programme facilitators, the delegation set out on a thoughtfully curated journey designed to blend experiential learning with cultural exploration.

Upon arrival at the bustling Kuah Ferry Terminal, participants were introduced to Langkawi’s remarkable development story through a visit to the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA). The delegation was warmly received by Madam Marzaliana Ghazali and Mr Don Sayid Anand Abdullah, together with the LADA team, whose hospitality set a welcoming tone for the day’s programme.

During an engaging and informative session, Mr Don Sayid shared valuable insights into LADA’s strategic role in shaping Langkawi’s transformation into one of Malaysia’s premier island destinations. He also highlighted the island’s prestigious status as a UNESCO Global Geopark, offering students a deeper understanding of the interplay between sustainable tourism, environmental stewardship, and regional development.

The briefing not only enriched the participants’ appreciation of Langkawi’s global significance, but also underscored Malaysia’s commitment to preserving natural heritage while advancing economic growth in a sustainable and responsible manner.

The journey then continued with a vibrant cultural immersion at the Langkawi Craft Complex, where the group was welcomed by Madam Nurul Haida Ahmad and her team. There, participants were introduced to the rich world of Malaysian handicrafts, with particular emphasis on the intricate art of batik. From observing skilled artisans at work to trying their own hand at batik painting, the experience offered a memorable and hands-on appreciation of local creativity, artistry, and cultural heritage. The students also had the opportunity to explore a wide selection of locally produced crafts and products, thereby lending direct support to the livelihoods of Langkawi’s artisan community.

As the day drew to a close, the spirit of Malaysian hospitality shone warmly when all participants were treated to a special dinner hosted by LADA at HIG Hotel Langkawi. The evening unfolded in a convivial atmosphere filled with laughter, lively conversations, and the forging of new friendships, beautifully capturing the true essence of international exchange and cross-cultural connection.

More than a simple excursion, the first day in Langkawi served as a powerful introduction to cultural diversity, sustainable tourism, and the enduring value of global friendship. As the students continue their journey across the island, they carry with them not only memories of scenic beauty and new experiences, but also a deeper appreciation of unity in diversity. Programmes such as this reaffirm the transformative power of experiential learning in shaping globally competent graduates, proving that meaningful connections and lifelong memories often begin with a single journey. – Mohd Azri Abdul Aziz
