UUM Strengthens Malaysia–China Relations Through Ambassador’s Visit
SINTOK, 5 November 2025 – Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) received a courtesy call from the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Malaysia, His Excellency (HE) Ouyang Yujing, in a ceremony held today at the Auditorium of the School of International Studies (SoIS), UUM Sintok.
The visit symbolised the close ties between UUM and the Chinese Embassy, particularly in strengthening academic cooperation, research, and student talent development between the two nations.
The ceremony was also attended by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Prof. Dr Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Dr Mohd Fo’ad Sakdan.
In his address, Prof. Dr. Mohd Azizuddin emphasised that the visit was more than a formal engagement. It was a reflection of friendship, shared knowledge, and cooperation that form the foundation of Malaysia-China relations.
In addition, he also expressed his sincere appreciation to the Chinese Embassy for its continued support through the Chinese Embassy Scholarship, which was first introduced in 2023.
During the ceremony, a total of 29 outstanding students from SoIS, UUM received the Chinese Embassy Scholarship.
According to him, the scholarship has had a significant impact on the UUM academic community by expanding access to education, easing students’ financial burdens, and nurturing a spirit of excellence and global awareness.
“This scholarship is not merely financial assistance, but a symbol of shared vision between Malaysia and China to produce a generation of scholars and future leaders who uphold cultural understanding, mutual respect, and international cooperation,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Ouyang Yujing expressed hope that UUM would continue to achieve greater success in producing talented graduates capable of contributing to national development and addressing societal needs.
The event also featured the presentation of a mock cheque and the launch of a book titled, Malaysia–China: Half a Century of Partnership, produced by scholarship recipients and UUM academics in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Malaysia–China diplomatic relations established in 1974.
Also present were Datuk Adzli Abu Shah (Kedah Police Chief), Dato’ Muhammad Abdul Halim (Perlis Police Chief), Mdm. Zuraini Mohd Yussof (Director of the Kedah National Security Council), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nazariah Osman (Dean of SoIS), senior officials from the Chinese Embassy, and members of the university community.
